Hearing Aid Hygiene

Have you noticed your hearing aids playing up over the wet, humid summer? It’s usual for hearing
aids to suffer the impacts of moist air around the sensitive microphone, so these tips are
essential.

  1. Keep your hearing aids dry. Before bed, open the battery compartment and leave the hearing aids
in a dry, cool place overnight. You can also use a hearing aid dehumidifier or a drying kit to
absorb moisture. Take your hearing aid for a clean and service every six months.
  2. Handle your hearing aids with care. Avoid dropping them or exposing them to extreme
temperatures. When removing or inserting your hearing aids, do so over a soft surface (e.g. a towel
on the table) to minimise the risk of damage.
  3. Replace batteries when needed. If your hearing aids are rechargeable, follow the
manufacturer’s instructions for charging, storing and renewing the batteries when required (usually
    every two years).
  4. Protect your hearing aids from excessive dirt, dust, and hairspray. Additionally, avoid wearing
them while swimming or in the shower unless they are specifically designed for water resistance.
  5. Use a soft, dry cloth or a specialised hearing aid cleaning brush to gently remove any wax or
debris from the device. Be careful not to use any liquids or cleaning solutions unless specifically
    recommended by the manufacturer.
  6. Change domes, wax filters and slim tubes as recommended by your audiologist or ask for a clean
and service at your local hearing centre.
  7. If you have a regular earmould, ask your hearing care professional to re-tube the tubing when it
becomes hard or discoloured. This will increase your comfort and the efficiency of your hearing
    aid.
  8. Schedule regular check-ups with your audiologist or hearing healthcare professional. They can
perform routine maintenance, clean your hearing aids thoroughly, and address any issues or concerns
    you may have.
Remember, taking good care of your hearing aids will help prolong their lifespan and ensure they
continue to provide you with the best possible sound quality.
