Local hearing, Local knowledge!

We have lots happening at Jervis Bay Hearing Centre this year, with new Medicare
rebates for Audiology services and Tinnitus treatments at the forefront of our work.

Specialist Audiologist, Alison Chiam, was a guest speaker at Audiology Australia’s National
conference in May. Joining leading academics from America and England, Alison was part of a panel
discussing how Tinnitus solutions can best be delivered in clinics.

Tinnitus is a condition where a person hears a sound that has no external source. This sound can be
a ringing, buzzing, hissing, or any other type of noise. It can be constant or intermittent and
range from mildly annoying to severely debilitating. While tinnitus is not a disease in itself, it
can be a symptom of an underlying condition such as hearing loss, ear infections, or even stress.
It can also be a side effect of certain medications or exposure to loud noises.
There are a variety of treatments available to help manage symptoms of tinnitus. Through
specialised audiology services, patients can find relief from the constant ringing or buzzing in
their ears.

Jervis Bay Hearing Centre is excited to announce that due to recent changes, the qualifications of
audiologists and their capacities to perform diagnostic audiology tests will be recognised under
Medicare. This important change makes hearing services more affordable and accessible.
Previously, the only way to claim a Medicare rebate for a paid hearing assessment was to get a
referral from an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or a neurologist, which can be difficult
and expensive. Now, you can claim a Medicare rebate for Audiology Services with a GP referral.
These exciting Medicare changes will make a huge difference in breaking down financial barriers
that may have prevented someone from booking a hearing test.
